I've heard that a lot of people have had issues with electric fences when it comes to keeping in Nigerian Dwarf goats. Therefore, I wanted to make sure it worked for my goats before posting anything about it. I have had goats in this set-up for almost a year. It currently holds in three adult does and one nine week old doeling. I would also like to mention that there are no bucks on my property and that may be a big part of why my electric fence works. All of my goats have never been around an electric fence so of course they did test it. It has 6 strands of wire, almost 4' high.
In the seasonal world of chicken cycles, usually hens stop laying eggs during the winter. There is a correlation between the shorter hours of light and whether they'll produce or not. Some people work around this natural process by adding lights with timers inside the chicken coop for after the chickens go to bed. This set-up will allow the chickens to lay just about all year. I've always thought it wasn't worth the trade-off of electricity costs and the few amount of chickens I have. I also think if nature does it one way, it's probably best for the chicken to continue that path. Thus I'm always stuck with buying faded yellow yolked eggs from the store during the winter.

When DH and I first put up our electric fence, we used part of a hog panel screwed into one of our posts as a temporary gate. It was heavy and unruly, but alas temporary fixes usually aren't the best. My DH finished building me an actual gate a few days ago. He used 3 layers of 1 x 4's with metal garden fencing sandwiched in between along with various sized hex bolts securing it all together. The pdf plan that he used: Hoover Fence

As you may have noticed I love taking photos! The camera model that I use for most of my recent photos is a Nikon D5100. Up until now I have been switching between the kit lens that came with my camera and a Nikkor 16-85mm. Today I added another tool to my arsenal!! A wide angle Nikkor 10-24mm! I'm thinking of going into real estate photography and this will be the main lens that I work with. Here are a few shots I've taken with it:
It's quite a joy to have fresh, unadulterated milk that I got all by myself. It tastes so much different than store bought goats milk. Goat's milk is sweeter than whole cows milk, other than that there's not much difference.

Zoey is such an easy milker. That is... as long as I don't remove my hands from her udders once I start! If I have to adjust the bowl or anything else and remove both hands, once I resume milking she becomes a little dancing queen!!
I brought home my first goat today! Her registered name is HBR Catch Me If You Can, but I think we'll call her Chloe. DH and I drove all the way down to Indian Trail, NC to pick her up from Five Points Farm. I don't currently have another goat, but I'm hoping to pick one up next weekend. I really didn't want her to be solo, but my attempts at coordinating a pick up during the same weekend from 2 different states just didn't work out! For now I have my dog out in the pasture to keep her company and I try to be out there as much as I can so she warms up to me.

We've had a couple breakouts... I think I'll have to alter the wire spacing in the fence.

This year I would actually like to get some strawberries out of my garden. Up until this point most of the strawberries have been eaten by the birds. When I planted them, the plants were spread out to give them room to grow so it wasn't easy having a strong net system over them. When I did spread a net over them, the birds seemed to get caught in the netting half the time and I'd have to free them... to live another day to eat the fruits of my labor. Therefore, this year one of the things on my to-do list was to make a cage/enclosure to keep the birds out. Mission accomplished! I replanted the strawberries close together, which also makes for less weeding and put together my net system. It's not too big so it's easy to lift up when I need to do some harvesting.

Getting eggs from my chickens every day can make differentiating hard boiled eggs from not hard boiled eggs a bit tricky in the fridge. I usually have 2 or 3 egg cartons floating in there at any given time. One day I stumbled upon a technique that was easy, chemical-free, and didn't alter the flavor of the eggs. Simply add a handfull of dry onion skins to the pot of boiling water with your eggs.
I first came across the wheel bug last summer. When I went to go check on my bee hive I noticed a very strange, prehistoric looking creature cruising around on top of the hive roof. I snapped a few pics and posted them online to see if anyone knew what it was. I found out that it was known as a wheel bug and it was probably doing some bee hunting. I will admit that at first I was not too fond of this bug, considering the work I put into my bees only to have them eaten. Yet, there was only one lone bug that I saw and I couldn't imagine it doing that much harm.

If you do encounter this insect in your yard be careful though! They are capable of piercing skin and secreting a substance which is said to be 10x worse than a hornet sting! Eek..
I went to a bee workshop this morning hosted by my local bee club. The rain even held off until we were about to wrap things up. If you are thinking about or just getting started with bees, I would definitely recommend reaching out to your local club. They oftentimes have classes in the spring and can connect you to a mentor to help you one-on-one.

I took this video of an easy technique to mark a queen on a frame. This frame ended up going into an observation hive that will soon be in the local visitor's center.
When plants flower when we don't want them to, it's called bolting. Rhubarb is one of those plants that we don't want flowering. A flowering rhubarb is undesirable because the flowering process takes a lot of energy away from stalk production. Unless propagation from seed is your plan, the flowering stalks should be removed. Rhubarb propagation from seed takes years to develop a harvest-able stock. Also, the resulting rhubarb from seed can sometimes be inferior to the mother plant. It's easier and better to propagate rhubarb by dividing the crown of a plant that's at least 4 years old.

Now that Spring is upon us, a lot of rhubarb plants are probably bolting at this point. I know mine has been, I've had to cut many flower stalks off by now. I've read that usually only established rhubarb, that's a a couple years old bolts. I only planted mine last spring. Sometimes rhubarb does flower when it is under stress. But, since it hasn't been put through any stress I will attribute it to the cultivar - Victoria. Some cultivars are known to bolt more easily.

When removing flower stalks, use a sharp clean knife to take off the stalk as close to the ground as possible.

Today I opened up the people door of my chicken coop. I usually open that one first to peek in to see if they're any eggs, so as not to disturb any hens that may be sitting. One of my EE's were in a nesting box so I left and was excited about getting my first tinted egg of the season. I noticed more feathers in the coop than usual and figured one of my chickens may have started molting. When I went back a couple hours later, I opened the nesting box door and Eglantine was still sitting there. On closer inspection I looked at her face and her eyes were closed. It was kind of eerie because she was sitting right up and everything, like she was sleeping. I don't know how she died, she was fine the day before. If it was an animal, it didn't do a very good job of eating anything, as I didn't see any blood. It would also had to have climbed over the 7' of chicken wire and went inside the coop. DF will take her out later when he gets home and inspect her for any wounds.

I am now down to 3 hens and 6 chicks.
Have you ever bought a package of green onions and after cutting them up just threw the bottom roots away? Yea me too, but not anymore! I may not even be buying green onions at all in the near future. That's because they are super easy to grow by just planting the root end. I experimented by planting a 1" long stem with roots and one that was a couple inches tall. Both are growing well, but it seems the smaller one actually has a little more growth. The rest of the green onions that were in the package were looking a bit wilt-ish, so I placed them in a cup with a little water and even they perked right up.
I am definitely not a winter person, never have been, never will. It almost feels as if I spend the whole winter just waiting for spring to come. In the warm weather more often than not, you will find me outside engaging in a plethora of activities on my property. I am quite motivated for this spring and have a lot of things that I want to accomplish before falls comes to an end.

List of things that I want to do:

Make a honey bee swarm trap and hopefully get some free honeybees!

Build 2 more top bar hives

Make a few cages so the birds stop eating all of my strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries!

Build a fence for goats

Build small barn to house goats and potentially horses

Get a couple, good quality Nigerian Dwarf goats for milking

Read more »Robynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05977455971157196168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6191928841072189684.post-89389517029027370782013-01-19T23:40:00.001-05:002013-01-21T16:06:35.174-05:00Snow and No Power!

After 2 days without, I have power once again. Thick, wet snow blanketed the western region of Virginia on Thursday, January 17th. I held no ill will towards the power company whatsoever and was actually kind of surprised it didn't take longer to restore. The bushes on my property were flattened to the ground, I can just imagine all the branches/trees that came down on power lines and poles. Thursday night after the bulk of the snow had fallen I could hear branches breaking in the distance.

I could get used to this weather and have been enjoying it immensely, that's for sure! I was able to get this shot of my neighbors beautiful horse.

On another note, the warm weather also gave me a chance to open up my hive and see how bad my bee situation was. Well, I suppose I'll have to get a swarm in the spring to replace my hive full of dead bees. There were a handful that were still alive, but they'll probably be gone in a couple weeks. Pictures to follow.
